Before Smartphones: How Did We Do It?

Young man in a blue car studies a folded map, scratching his head beside a winding country road under a sunny sky.

It’s hard to remember what life was like before we carried a camera, map, telephone, calendar, music player and encyclopedia in our pockets. Today, if we need directions, a phone number or the answer to a question, we can find it within seconds. Before smartphones, it took a little more planning and sometimes a lot more patience.

For this week’s Friday Brain Games, we’re going back to a time when getting lost meant pulling over to unfold a road map. If you missed your favorite television show, you couldn’t stream it the next day. You simply waited and hoped it would be shown again.

Do You Remember Life Before Smartphones?

Many of us kept a phone book near the house phone, carried important numbers in an address book and checked the newspaper to see what was playing at the movie theater. Long road trips required printed directions, a road atlas or help from someone who claimed they knew a shortcut.

Taking pictures was different, too. You couldn’t immediately check whether everyone’s eyes were open. You had to finish the roll of film, take it somewhere to be developed and wait to see how the pictures turned out. Sometimes the blurry or imperfect photos became the ones we remembered most.

Music also required patience. You might wait beside the radio for your favorite song and try to press the record button at exactly the right moment. If the announcer talked over the beginning, you had to wait for another chance.

Take the Before Smartphones Quiz

This Before Smartphones Quiz will test how much you remember about getting directions, finding information, making telephone calls, listening to music and taking pictures before smartphones changed our daily routines.

Some answers may come back immediately. Others may have you thinking, “I haven’t heard that in years!”

How Did You Do?

  • 10–12 correct: You’re a life-before-smartphones expert!

  • 7–9 correct: You remember the good old days pretty well.

  • 4–6 correct: A few memories may need rewinding.

  • 0–3 correct: You may have adapted to modern technology a little too well!

Whether you miss those simpler days or appreciate having everything available at the touch of a screen, it’s fun to remember how we managed without today’s technology.
