Tampa Bay Brain Games

Can You Complete the Sentence?

Elderly woman in an orange sweater uses a tablet, surrounded by glowing tech icons and words on a dark background.
Brain exercises doesn't always have to involve complicated puzzles.

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "As far as the crow flies," or "Two heads are better than one," without even thinking about it? These familiar expressions are called idioms or proverbs—short sayings that have been passed down through generations. They often carry a lesson, a bit of wisdom, or simply paint a colorful picture with words.

The interesting thing is that our brains don't store these sayings as random words. Instead, they're tucked away in our long-term memory. When you hear the beginning of a familiar phrase, your brain automatically starts searching for the ending.

That's exactly what makes today's Tampa Bay Brain Games so much fun! You can check out more about the history of idioms at Britannica. https://www.britannica.com/list/7-everyday-english-idioms-and-where-they-come-from

Why Brain Games Matter

Activities like this do more than bring back fond memories. They encourage your brain to:

  • Recall information from long-term memory.

  • Strengthen language and vocabulary skills.

  • Improve focus and concentration.

  • Stimulate conversation and storytelling with family and friends.

The best part? They're enjoyable! Brain exercise doesn't always have to involve complicated puzzles. Sometimes, remembering a familiar saying is enough to give your mind a healthy workout.

Did You Know?

Many of these sayings are hundreds of years old. Some date back to ancient Rome, while others came from farming, sailing, or everyday life. Even today, they continue to be part of our conversations because their meanings are timeless.

For example:

  • "Turn a blind eye" means to deliberarl ignore something you know is happening.

  • "Feeling under the weather" means you are not feeling well or a little sick.

  • "Beat around the bush" means to avoid getting to the point.
