Turning 65 and Drowning in Medicare Mail?

Senior couple on advertising mailer Turning 65 and new to Medicare

I often hear “I am turning 65 next month and the amount of Medicare mail I’m getting is overwhelming.  How do I sort through all this?

If you’re approaching 65, your name has likely appeared on a public “aging-in” list. Insurance companies use these lists to send plan information, and it can quickly feel overwhelming.

Here’s how to sort through the noise without losing your sanity:

1. Know What’s Marketing vs. Official Mail

Not everything in your mailbox is urgent.

  • Official mail will typically come from Medicare or the Social Security Administration.

  • Most other pieces are advertisements from private insurance companies.

If it looks flashy, colorful, and says things like “Call Now!” or “Don’t Miss Out!” — it’s marketing.

2. Don’t Let Urgency Pressure You

Many mailers are designed to feel time sensitive. While there are enrollment windows, you do not need to call every number you see. Slow down and gather information first.

3. Decide What Type of Coverage You Want to Explore

Before responding to anything, understand your three paths:

  • Original Medicare

  • Original Medicare plus a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) and a Drug Plan

  • Medicare Advantage (all-in-one alternative)

Once you know which direction you’re leaning, most of that mail becomes irrelevant.

4. Work With One Trusted Source

Instead of responding to 20 mailers, choose one licensed agent or go directly to Medicare.gov. An independent agent in your neighborhood can compare multiple carriers and explain your options in plain English.

5. You Don’t Have to Decide Today

Your Initial Enrollment Period gives you a 7-month window (3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and 3 months after). You have time to make an informed decision.

Turning 65 is a milestone and it should not feel stressful. The key is understanding that most of that mail is simply advertising. Once you focus on your specific needs, the stack gets a lot less intimidating.
